hummingbird 13Playing outdoors is a form of exercise that promotes well-being and wholesome physical development. Children are naturally drawn to active play outdoors: it allows them to explore their environment, develop muscle strength and coordination, and gain self-confidence. Playing actively outdoors also increases flexibility, fine and gross motor skills and is related to the development of a wide variety of physical skills, including those involved in sports.
Children have a great need for physical exercise and activity and a chance to use their muscles to run, swing, jump, skate and ride a bike, and to be out in the fresh air and sunshine (appropriately protected from the sun's rays, of course). They like to use their whole body when they play outdoors, and find such physical activities interesting and challenging.

Infant/Toddlers and two year olds have the opportunity to experience daily weather permitting on their own outdoor learning environment. The playground allows them to experience activities designed by their teachers, to experience the world around them.

outdoor learning 1The three and four-year-olds play on the commercial playground that was provided by KaBoom, and Foresters Insurance on June 1, 2013. The playground area of the preschool yard includes a climber, two slides, a climbing wall, a dramatic play stage, and an outdoor art area. In April of 2013 “Making An Impact Foundation” provided the funding to open an environmental play yard where children play in a natural learning environment that includes a creek bed, musical instruments, lambs ear, rosemary and lavender with tree cookies and tree trunk balance beams. The children can pick real blueberries and see red wiggler worms compost left over fruits and vegetables. The teachers lead the children in classroom group activities such as singing and story- telling. Field trips and other special offerings, such as art and nature programming are a part of the Creative Curriculum activities.
