Curriculum

LWPSC uses the Creative curriculum in the Infant/Toddler, two year old and three-year-old classes. Active learning, whether planned by adults or initiated by children, is the central element of the Creative Curriculum. Creative Curriculum helps teachers and caregivers implement developmentally appropriate practices and offer responsive daily routines and meaningful experiences that nurture learning and development. Creative Curriculum offers daily opportunities for teachers and caregivers to use assessment information to individualize routines and experiences for young children. Creative Curriculum provides built-in guidance for building the kind of meaningful partnerships with families that are an essential factor in how infants, toddlers and two year olds experience your program and how much they gain from it. The three year old children learn through direct, hands-on experiences with people, objects, events, and ideas. LWPSC has trained adult who understand child development and how to scaffold the important areas of learning for the children ages 0-5 years of age to offer guidance and support.

Graduating students from its three-year old program whenever possible, LWPSC encourages children to discover the world of books and language utilizing the tested NC Pre-Kindergarten program, which stresses basic skills and school-readiness. Themes, skills, and concepts are developed through quality children's fiction and nonfiction trade books.

Follow-Through

LWPSC assists its graduates and families with the transition to public school and remain as a resource to the families as long as is needed. The performance of graduates through the public school system is also tracked as a means of evaluating the program. LWPSC has further evidenced its commitment to the family nature of the preschool by partnering with an evaluation researcher working at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Institute for Social Capital to track academic progress for Lakewood Preschool alumni. This partnership allows LWPSC to track our students through third grade and evaluate the effectiveness of our programming and service delivery and make necessary adjustments to enhance student learning
